The Causes of Mesothelioma Have Been Under Study for Several Decades

The causes of mesothelioma have been under study for several decades. It is estimated that nine out of ten cases of mesothelioma are caused by exposure to asbestos, the mineral that was once widely used in building materials, brake linings, and hundreds of other products used in everyday life. Other possible causes of mesothelioma, that are still unproven, are discussed below.

Genetic mutation Cells

According to the Mayo clinic, the causes of mesothelioma can be attributed to the genetic mutation that turns healthy cells into cancer cells. These abnormal cells multiply at random and do not die like normal cells. The accumulation of cancer cells form a tumor that can invade other body tissues and spread further through the body.

Still not known to cause genetic mutation that leads to cancer mesothelioma, but several factors seem to affect their incidence:

  1. Terms inherited
  2. The environment of an individual
  3. General Health
  4. Decisions and a lifestyle, like smoking

Exposure to asbestos Starts Mutation

Apparently, this genetic mutation may be initiated when asbestos fibers are embedded in the lungs or other internal organs. Only in the United States are diagnosed between 2,000 and 3,000 people with mesothelioma every year. Almost all of these unfortunate individuals have a history of exposure to asbestos. However, a complete determination of the exact causes of mesothelioma is both desirable and helpful in the struggle to find a cure for this devastating disease.

A National Study on the Causes of Mesothelioma

In the United Kingdom is conducting a research and clinical study for the purpose of discovering more about the causes of mesothelioma. This “National Study of Labor lung disease,” is designed to identify more closely the causes of mesothelioma among the thousands of victims in the United Kingdom, and the results will give birth to the causes of mesothelioma in individuals worldwide.

Other Causes of Mesothelioma

In studies where animals have been used, it was found that the Simian virus (SV40) causes mesothelioma. It was also found that some polio vaccines that were administered during the mid-fifties until the early ’60s were contaminated with SV40, but has not been established no definitive link between SV40 and mesothelioma.

Instead, there is a fist of documented cases of mesothelioma in patients who had X-rays that used thorium dioxide. These x-rays have not been in continuous use for many years because of the link between thorium dioxide and cancer.
